03/03/12: NEWMARKET, NH — A bullet was found in the boys' locker room at the Junior/Senior High School at 12:55 p.m. on Thursday, prompting a school-wide lock down as administrators and police searched the grounds.
After a 90-minute search, the bullet was discovered to have belonged to a student who had gone shooting with his parents the night before. The student told school officials the bullet fell out of his pant's pocket when he changed for gym class.
The .22 caliber bullet was found in the downstairs bathroom in the boys' locker room and due to the closure of the main floor bathrooms, administrators reasoned that the bullet could have come from any student in the building, not just students participating in gym classes.
"Everything went smoothly," said Principal Chris Andriski. "We did a Shelter in Place drill while five administrators and five members of the police searched for contraband. After an hour and a half we had searched the whole building."
The Shelter in Place drill closes the doors to each classroom and teachers can still teach classes, but do not leave their classroom. The drill lasted from 12:55 p.m. to 2:20 p.m. School and police officials concluded the act was not deliberate. Rumors spread that a student was trying to flush the bullet and that there was possibly a gun, but these were found to be unsubstantiated.
